MS and the heat – How to deal with the hot summer sun and still have fun!
During the summer, being in the sun can cause some challenges for people who suffer from MS – a rise in body temperature can cause the symptoms of MS to worsen (temporarily). But that doesn’t mean you need to stay indoors all summer! By being on the lookout for signs of increased body temperature and taking some easy steps to avoid overheating, you can get the most out of the summer season.
Signs of overheating
- Numbness
- Tingling
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Weakness
- Fatigue
- Visual problems (fluctuations)
Any type of heat source, not just the sun, can make these symptoms occur.
In order to prevent these symptoms while in the sun, here are some simple steps you can take to protect yourself during the hot summer months:
TIPS to stay cool
The following TIPS can help manage your symptoms when you have a rise in body temperature and can help you stay cool:
When exercising
- After exercising, try to cool down or rest
- Exercise in the morning (if outside)
- Go swimming (Avoid heated pools)
- Exercise in an air conditioned gym (if indoors)
- Avoid exercising on really hot days
When outdoors
- Wear a hat
- Try to stay in the shade, (walk on the shaded part of the street)
- Avoid outdoor market – Do your shopping in an air conditioned shopping place
- Wear clothes made out of cotton or with “cooling” properties
General daily living
- Keep hydrated and drink plenty of fluids (especially if you are active) – cool drinks are recommended and try to avoid caffeinated beverages
- Purchase an air conditioner or a fan for warm rooms or areas
- Take cool showers or baths
Having MS does not mean you can’t have fun in the sun. As long you are prepared and are aware of your body temperature, you can enjoy the heat and be safe.
